Dakota is a given name derived from the name of two states in the United States: North Dakota or South Dakota, or from the name of an indigenous Native American tribe. The name is translated to mean "friend", "friendly" or "allies" in the Yankton-Yanktonai and Santee dialects of the Lakota Sioux language.
Dakota is in use for both girls and boys. It was the 203rd most popular name for American boys in 2007, having ranked in the top 100 most popular names from 1995 to 2000. It first appeared among the top 1,000 most popular names for boys in the United States in 1985. It was the 239th most popular name for American girls in 2007. It has ranked among the top 400 names for American girls since 1991. The name has been in occasional use for both sexes in the United States since at least the 1940s.
Dakota was a brand of cigarettes introduced by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco (RJR) in 1990. Their marketing was targeted towards young blue-collar "virile females", in an attempt to displace the Marlboro brand without diluting Reynolds' dominant Camel brand's appeal to males. After test-marketing in Houston, Tucson, Phoenix, and Nashville didn't yield the desired results, the brand was withdrawn.
Prior to the marketing campaign, its details were leaked to the Washington Post. In spite of the manufacturer's denial to have specifically targeted young females, this revelation sparked widespread discussion of targeted advertising in general in the media.
The Minnesota 400 was a streamlined passenger train operated by the Chicago and North Western Railway on its southern Minnesota line between Mankato, Minnesota and Wyeville, Wisconsin. It began running in 1936. In 1950 it was extended to run between Chicago, Illinois and Huron, South Dakota and renamed the Dakota 400. It would be further extended to Rapid City, South Dakota, before being cut back to Mankato, in 1960. This final iteration was named the Rochester 400 and it ceased operation in 1963.
The Minnesota 400 began service in a similar way to the original Twin Cities to Chicago 400, with heavyweight passenger cars pulled by an ordinary, non-streamlined steam locomotive. These were originally C&NW Class D 4-4-2 Atlantics, but they were already more than 30 years old at that point. In 1938, more passenger cars were added to the trains, so the locomotives were replaced by Class ES 4-6-2 Pacifics, with streamlined shrouds. These were still about 25 years old, but were better able to handle the heavier load. The train still primarily ran with heavyweight passenger cars until after World War II, finally receiving a full consist of streamlined cars in 1946. It was still another four years before the first EMD E8 diesel locomotives began pulling the train in 1950. At that time, the service was expanded to South Dakota and renamed the Dakota 400.
Bar is a reality show aired by the commercial television station POP TV, in which contestants live in the same house for three months and compete against each other to see who can run a bar the best. With a small payment, viewers can follow the events of the show live on the show's website, as more than 20 cameras follow the everyday lives of the contestants. POP TV plays a recap of the day's events every evening except Sundays.
Each Wednesday, competitors rate each other's performance by assigning each other either pluses or minuses. The competitor who receives the most minuses, and the contestant chosen by the one with the most pluses, find themselves in the "hot seat" and must compete against each other on Saturday night. Viewers vote by telephone which one of the contestants will remain in the show. The competitor with the lowest number of votes must leave the bar. The bar manager directs the competitors.

A bar association is a professional body of lawyers. Some bar associations are responsible for the regulation of the legal profession in their jurisdiction; others are professional organizations dedicated to serving their members; in many cases, they are both. In many Commonwealth jurisdictions, the bar association comprises lawyers who are qualified as barristers or advocates in particular, versus solicitors (see bar council). Membership in bar associations may be mandatory or optional for practicing attorneys, depending on jurisdiction.
The use of the term bar to mean "the whole body of lawyers, the legal profession" comes ultimately from English custom. In the early 16th century, a railing divided the hall in the Inns of Court, with students occupying the body of the hall and readers or benchers on the other side. Students who officially became lawyers crossed the symbolic physical barrier and were "admitted to the bar". Later, this was popularly assumed to mean the wooden railing marking off the area around the judge's seat in a courtroom, where prisoners stood for arraignment and where a barrister stood to plead. In modern courtrooms, a railing may still be in place to enclose the space which is occupied by legal counsel as well as the criminal defendants and civil litigants who have business pending before the court.
